What RBC Cup hangover? Expected to take a step back after becoming the first host team to win Canada’s National Junior A Championship since 2005, the Portage Terriers were almost as good in 2015-16 as they were in their record-setting 2014-15 campaign. Portage won 52 games, just one fewer than the previous season, and their remarkable +153 goal differential was just behind their +165 mark of a year ago. The Terriers put an exclamation point on their season by winning their last 20 games, setting a franchise record. In fact, Portage did not lose in regulation after Dec. 15, a run of 25 games in a row with a point. Portage’s league-leading offence (276 goals) was led by Brad Bowles, who won the MJHL scoring title with 102 points, while twin brother Shawn finished ninth with 65 points, despite playing only 39 games. The brothers joined blue-liners Brett Orr and Dean Stewart as the lone returnees from the RBC Cup-winning team. On the back end, Nathan Park led all goaltenders with a 1.92 goals-against average, 38 wins, and seven shutouts, while Josh Bykowski went unbeaten in his 11 appearances in the Terriers goal.
