2014 Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, set to start in Stoney Creek and Hamilton, Ont.

STONEY CREEK, Ont. – The puck is about to drop on the 2014 Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, at the Gateway Ice Centre in Stoney Creek.

The sixth annual event, presented in partnership by Hockey Canada, the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association, Tourism Hamilton and the Stoney Creek Girls Hockey Association, starts this Sunday, April 20 and runs through next Saturday, April 26.

Host team the Stoney Creek Sabres join five regional champions, the Fraser Valley Phantom (Pacific - British Columbia), Edmonton Thunder (Pacific - Alberta), Weyburn Gold Wings (West), Sudbury Lady Wolves (Ontario) and Moncton Rockets (Atlantic), in a five-day preliminary round, followed by semifinals and medal games.

Full-tournament general admission ticket packages to all 19 games, including the semifinals and both medal games, can be purchased for just $45 each, plus applicable fees, by clicking HERE. Day passes are available at the door for $6 apiece during the preliminary round and $10 each for semifinals and medal games. Please email [email protected] for more information. The gold medal game will air on TSN/RDS, the official broadcasters of Hockey Canada, with the game starting at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT on Saturday, April 26. Please check your local listings for broadcast times in your area. All preliminary round games, as well as the semifinals Friday, April 25 and bronze medal game, earlier Saturday, will be available for viewing online by FASTHockey at www.hockeycanada.ca/essocup. Local Hamilton station Cable 14 will air Stoney Creek Sabres games at 7 p.m. ET throughout the preliminary round.

“We can’t wait to welcome the top female Midget teams from across the country to Hamilton and Stoney Creek,” said Glenn Boles, co-chair of the 2014 Esso Cup host committee. “This is the first time Ontario has hosted the Esso Cup and we hope to make it the best and biggest ever, so come on out to the Gateway Ice Centre to see some of Canada’s future women’s hockey stars in action on the ice.”

Tickets for the 2014 Esso Cup awards banquet are just $20 each, with the event scheduled for 9 a.m. ET on Friday, April 25 at the Quality Inn and Suites Hamilton, and featuring Sochi 2014 gold medallist Laura Fortino as guest speaker.
