Bob Nicholson, who served 16 years as Hockey Canada’s president and CEO, was presented Saturday with the first-ever COC President’s Award at a Canadian Olympic Committee dinner reception in Edmonton, Alta.

The award was created to recognize an individual, group of individuals or entity that has, in a given period or through a specific project or activity, demonstrated a significant commitment to Olympism and the furtherance of Olympic ideals in or for Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee.

“I am so proud to present the very first ever COC President’s Award to Bob Nicholson, a sport leader, visionary and pioneer for the Olympic Movement in Canada,” Marcel Aubut, president of the COC, said in a statement. “He is a builder who has successfully led Canada’s hockey program and athletes for decades. His career is full of amazing national and international experiences and accomplishments. On behalf of the COC, congratulations on making a positive impact during your stellar career, Bob.”

Nicholson, a vice-chairman with the Edmonton Oilers Entertainment Group, was president of Hockey Canada from July 1, 1998 to June 1, 2014, leading Canadian hockey to unparalleled success.

Under Nicholson, Canada’s national teams won 71 medals in international competition, 44 of them gold. Included in that total are seven Olympic gold medals, including sweeps of the men’s and women’s hockey tournaments in 2002, 2010 and 2014.
