Jakub Vrana made a little history Friday night at the 2014 Entry Draft, becoming the highest-drafted alumnus of the World Junior A Challenge from the Czech Republic when he was selected 13th overall by the Washington Capitals.

The Czech forward, who had a goal in four games as a 16-year-old underager with the Czechs at the 2012 tournament in Yarmouth, N.S., was the first of three tournament alumni chosen in the first round.

Nick Schmaltz, who set the single-tournament scoring record at the 2013 World Junior A Challenge en route to the MVP award, was selected 20th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks, while David Pastrnak, Vrana’s teammate with the Czechs in 2012, went to the Boston Bruins with the No. 25 pick.

In total, 23 World Junior A Challenge alumni were selected in Philadelphia, including six members of the gold medal-winning United States entry from the 2013 World Junior A Challenge in Yarmouth, N.S. (Eiserman, Franklin, Johnson, Mantha, Poganski, Schmaltz).

Since the first World Junior A Challenge in Yorkton and Humboldt, Sask., in 2006, 205 drafted players have taken part in the tournament, either prior to their selection or during the seasons following.
