2014 TELUS Cup award winners announced

Semifinals set for Saturday

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – The 2014 TELUS Cup, Canada’s 41st National Midget Championship, held its awards banquet Friday night at the Moose Jaw Curling Club. The tournament’s awards committee named the recipients of the seven individual awards.

The awards were based on the tournament’s preliminary round, which ran from Monday to Friday.

The 2014 TELUS Cup award winners are:
TELUS Most Valuable Player – Lane Michasiw (Prince Albert Mintos)
Top Goaltender – Connor Ingram & Lane Michasiw (Prince Albert Mintos)
Top Forward – Tanner Wishnowski (Okanagan Rockets)
Top Defensive Player – Dawson Davidson (Moose Jaw Generals)
Most Sportsmanlike Player – Liam Finlay (Okanagan Rockets)
Top Scorer – Tanner Wishnowski (Okanagan Rockets)
Esso Scholarship – Oliver Jacobs (Toronto Young Nationals)

After an exciting week of preliminary round play, the semifinals are set for Saturday, April 26.

The first-place Prince Albert Mintos (3-0-2), who set the all-time tournament record for longest unbeaten streak (19 games) with a win Friday, meet the fourth place Okanagan Rockets (1-1-3) in the early semifinal (2 p.m. MT) Saturday, while the Toronto Young Nationals, who took second place with a 3-2-0 record, will face the Grenadiers de Châteauguay (2-1-2), who finished third, in the late semifinal (6 p.m. MT).

The gold medal game will be held Sunday, April 27 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT and will be shown on TSN/RDS, Hockey Canada’s official broadcasters (check your local listings). Both semifinals and the bronze medal game can be seen live via FASTHockey webcast through the game summary page at www.hockeycanada.ca/teluscup.

A number of future NHLers have taken part in Canada’s National Midget Championship since its inception in 1974, including 55 first-round draft picks, three No. 1 selections (Gord Kluzak, Wendel Clark and Sidney Crosby) and nine future Hockey Hall of Fame inductees (Glenn Anderson, Ron Francis, Mike Gartner, Al MacInnis, Larry Murphy, Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, Denis Savard and Steve Yzerman).
