CALGARY, Alta. – Several initiatives related to the safety, growth and development of hockey across the country will be discussed during Hockey Canada’s 95th annual general meeting (AGM), which runs from Thursday, May 29 through Sunday, June 1 at the Westin Calgary.

This year’s AGM will be the final one for Bob Nicholson, who will step down June 1 after 16 years as president and chief executive officer of Hockey Canada.

More than 250 representatives from regional and provincial hockey associations are gathering in Calgary for Hockey Canada’s AGM, with the governing body’s board of directors to be joined by life members and partner organizations, as well as councils that oversee female hockey, junior hockey, minor hockey, senior hockey and hockey development.

These representatives come together annually to set Hockey Canada’s direction and help the growth of the game.

Hockey Canada’s AGM will address topics that include player recruitment and retention, technology, e-learning, player safety, national championship hosting, council reports and regulation changes.

Hockey Canada’s 2014 awards banquet is set for the evening of Thursday, May 29, when eight deserving recipients will be honoured in different categories for their contributions and commitment to hockey in Canada.

The annual general meeting will also launch Hockey Canada’s 100th anniversary. The 2014-15 season will celebrate 100 years of Hockey Canada, which was formed Dec. 4, 1914 as the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association. The season will focus on engaging Canadians who currently play hockey to connect around the game. It will also provide an opportunity for all Canadians to learn what hockey has meant to the heritage of the country, and how Canadians experience the game today. Details of the season of celebration will be announced June 26 at a press conference in Toronto, Ont.
