Semifinals Set at 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge Tournament All-Star Team Announced

WINNIPEG, Man. – After five days of preliminary round action, the semifinals are set at the 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie, Man. Both semifinals will take place Monday, January 3 at the MTS Centre in downtown Winnipeg.

In the early game (3 p.m. CT), the United States meets Pacific. The game marks the fifth time in the last seven tournaments that the two teams will play for a chance to win gold; in that span, each team has won twice (U.S. in 20, Pacific in 20).

In the late semifinal (7:30 p.m. CT), Ontario and Quebec meet in an all-Canadian match-up. The two teams are the winningest Canadian entries at the tournament – Ontario has won seven gold medals (1992, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2004, 2008, 2009), while Quebec has won three (1986, 1994, 2006).

Also on Monday, fifth through tenth place will be decided in three games (all times Central):

Fifth-place game            Atlantic vs. West             7:30 p.m.          PCU Centre (Portage la Prairie, Man.)
Seventh-place game       Czech Republic vs. Finland          7:30 p.m.          MTS Iceplex (Winnipeg, Man.)
Tenth-place game          Germany vs. Slovakia                 3 p.m.              PCU Centre (Portage la Prairie, Man.)     

The gold medal game on Tuesday, January 4 will be broadcast on TSN/RDS, the official broadcaster of Hockey Canada. In addition, the three placement games and two semifinals on Monday, as well as Tuesday’s bronze medal game, will be available via webcast for $7 per game through FASTHockey at hockeycanada.fasthockey.com.

Following the conclusion of the preliminary round, the tournament all-star team was announced. Choices for the all-star team were based on preliminary round performance.

The World Under-17 Hockey Challenge brings together the top players in the world born in 1994 or later. The under-17 program is the first step in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence. Many players who compete at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge go on to represent Canada with the National Men’s Under-18 Team, National Junior Team and National Men’s Team.
