ATLANTIC REGION CHAMPIONS – KINGS COUNTY KINGS

For the first time ever, a team from Prince Edward Island has won the Atlantic Female Midget Championship and earned one of six coveted spots at the Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship. Not only did they beat previous Esso Cup participants the Bathurst Northern Stars in the regional tournament’s final game, but they did it front of a hometown crowd. Hockey P.E.I. reports that Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in the small town of Montague, P.E.I., was filled to capacity as host team the Kings County Kings garnered a 3-0 lead in the first two periods and only let a single Bathurst Northern goal up on the scoreboard in the third en route to a hard-fought 3-1 victory. The Kings County Kings also went undefeated through round robin play, easily taking the top spot in the standings going into the gold medal game. While the Kings County Kings may have automatically had a spot in the 2011 Atlantic Female Midget Championship as host team, there’s no doubt they’ve earned their way to the Esso Cup, first by sweeping Hockey P.E.I.’s female Midget AA provincial championship in five straight games, and then by doing the very same at the 2011 Atlantic Female Midget Championship. But will the newly crowned Atlantic representatives be able to maintain that winning streak at the 2011 Esso Cup in St. Albert, Alta.?
