HELSINKI, FINLAND – Hayley Wickenheiser has been named captain of Canada’s National Women’s Team for the 2009 IIHF World Women’s Championship.

Wickenheiser, the Shaunavon, Sask. native who played the 2008-09 season in Sweden with Ekilstuna’s second-division men’s team, has been captain of Canada’s National Women’s Team since 2007. She will lead Team Canada into the IIHF World Women’s Championship, April 4-12 in Hämeenlinna, Finland. Canada’s players and staff are currently in Helsinki for a pre-tournament camp.

Hockey Canada has also named its alternate captains for the tournament. Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/Brampton, CWHL), Becky Kellar (Hagersville, ON/Burlington, CWHL) and Caroline Ouellette will share duties as Canada’s alternates.

“We believe each of our players has the ability to be leaders in their own way and we’re looking to Hayley, Jayna, Becky and Caroline to bring that quality out in everyone,” says Melody Davidson, Canada’s head coach. “

Canada is looking to rebound at the 2009 IIHF World Women’s Championship after losing the 2008 gold medal final to the United States. Canada has won nine of 11 gold medals all-time at the IIHF World Women’s Championship.

TSN/RDS, Hockey Canada’s official broadcasters, will televise three games at the 2009 IIHF World Women’s Championship on April 8, 10, and 12. That includes the gold medal final, which will be held on April 12 at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT.

Hockey Canada’s official website, www.hockeycanada.ca, is the place to follow Team Canada from the start of the tournament right through to the last day. The site will feature game stories, photos and features.
