CALGARY, AB – The road to the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship continues as Canada’s National Junior Team development camp opens on Saturday, July 26th at the University of Ottawa.

A total of forty-seven of the top junior-aged players (born in 1989 or later) will be in Ottawa for the four-day camp, which wraps up on Tuesday, July 29th. This list includes three injured players that will not be taking part in any on-ice sessions. The 44 active players have been divided into two teams – Red and White – and will play in three intersquad games. Players and staff will be taking part in a 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship Host Committee Golf Tournament on July 30th.

The games will be held on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET. Also, both teams will practise daily. Fans are invited to take in the action; practices are free to the public and general admission to the intersquad games is $10 – tickets available for purchase at the door prior to games. All practices and games will be held at the University of Ottawa Sports Complex.

The camp will be used by National Junior Team staff – including head coach Benoit Groulx (Gatineau, QMJHL) and Hockey Canada head scout Al Murray – as an evaluation tool leading into the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship, which will be held in Ottawa from to . Groulx will be joined by assistant coaches Dave Cameron (Mississauga St. Michael’s, OHL) and Willie Desjardins (Medicine Hat, WHL).

“This week will give us a chance to evaluate where these players are heading into the 2008-09 season,” says Murray. “We expect a highly-competitive, fast-paced camp.”

In early December, Hockey Canada will announce a roster of players invited to the National Junior Team selection camp, the final step before the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship.
