CALGARY, AB – Hockey Canada and eBay Canada (www.ebay.ca) are offering hockey fans the chance to bid on vintage Team Canada 1976 jerseys, worn by members of Canada’s National Men’s Team against Team USA at the 2008 IIHF World Championship.

Twenty-five jerseys will be sold through the auction, including game worn jerseys of all players who played in the game on May 6th, 2008 against Team USA at the Halifax Metro Centre, along with the game issued jerseys for Team Canada’s alternates.

Hockey fans from around the world can place their bids on the jerseys at www.ebay.ca starting on Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 at 12 p.m. ET. The auction will last 10 days.

The 1976 vintage jerseys are in honour of Canada’s 1976 Canada Cup championship team, considered one of the greatest teams of all time. Seventeen players from that team went on to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The jerseys were made in Canada by NIKE. The jerseys are white, with a red crested maple leaf on the front. Zepter logos are found on each arm and there is a NIKE logo on the back middle, above the players’ name bar. There is a 1976 vintage logo on the back of the jersey at the bottom left and an IIHF 100th anniversary logo at bottom right.

Among the jerseys that are up for grabs are those of Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza, Rick Nash, Cam Ward and Mike Green.

Team Canada’s players will wear two sets of the 1976 vintage jerseys in the game. One set is up for auction through eBay and the other set will go to the players. In addition, three players – Heatley, Spezza and Ryan Getzlaf – will wear a third jersey, which will be sent for display at the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Net proceeds raised through this 2008 IIHF World Championship auction go to Canadian Hockey Foundation, to assist with the funding of national development programs, national teams and Hockey Canada initiatives that promote the sport at the grassroots level.
