CALGARY – Team Canada’s General Manager Steve Tambellini announced on Saturday morning that forward Scott Walker has been named to the team and will participate for Canada at the 2005 IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship.  Walker will participate in Team Canada’s training camp on Saturday and Sunday in Calgary.

Canada’s roster now stands at 23 players: three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards.

The 2005 Men’s World Championship marks the fourth time that Walker has represented Canada internationally.  Was an alternate captain for Team Canada at the 2001 World Championship in Germany where he finished tied for first on the team in scoring with six points (3g-3a).  Walker, a native of Cambridge, ON,  also played for Team Canada at the 1999 IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship (4th) and played two games with Canada’s National Men’s Team in 1992-93 scoring three goals.

A veteran of ten NHL seasons and 574 regular season NHL games, Walker began his career with the Vancouver Canucks and was then claimed in the NHL Expansion Draft by the Nashville Predators in June, 1999.  Last season, Walker led the Nashville Predators during the regular season in goals, assists, and points (25g-42a-67pts) as the Predators clinched a NHL playoff berth for the first time in franchise history.  Walker led all Nashville forwards in average ice time (20:03) and ranked third on the team with 94 penalty minutes in 2003-2004.

The 2005 IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship takes place April 30-May 15 in Innsbruck and Vienna, Austria. Canada has won gold at the past two Men’s World Championships – 2004 in Czech Republic and 2003 in Finland, and will be going for ‘three in a row’ in Austria. Overall, Canada has won 23 gold medals at the World Championship since 1920.

Team Canada will take on Team USA in two ‘pre-World Championship games’ in Halifax on April 20 at the Halifax Metro Centre and in Quebec City on April 22 at Le Colisée Pepsi.  Tickets are on-sale now.  These are the only two international games being played in North America prior to the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and they will be a tune up for both teams as they prepare for the Worlds in Austria taking place April 30-May 15th.
