Calgary, AB - Hockey Canada Week, a national celebration of the game of hockey, will take place November 7-14, 2004 at the national, provincial and local levels across Canada.

Hockey Canada Week is a celebration of the beginning of the hockey season all across Canada and aims to promote the positive values of hockey and the work done by the over four-million volunteers involved in minor hockey in Canada each and every year.

This second annual Hockey Canada Week is an initiative led by Hockey Canada with the participation of its 13 member Branches, minor hockey associations across Canada and other community and corporate partners.

What’s Happening During Hockey Canada Week - November 7-14, 2004?

  • Chevrolet’s National Hockey Parents Weekend. On Saturday, November 6 at 2:00pm (EST) hockey parents can attend a live broadcast of a parent seminar featuring Bobby Orr at participating Chevrolet dealers. Call 1-800-GM DRIVE to find a participating dealer near you. On Sunday, November 7 at 1:00pm (EST), a french program featuring Claude Mailhot and Mike Bossy will be broadcast on RDS.
  • The Search is on for Canada's Local Hockey Leaders.  The RBC Local Hockey Leaders program recognizes and rewards those behind the scenes volunteers who dedicate their time to supporting grassroots hockey in their community. One winner from each of Hockey Canada's 13 member branches will receive a place of honour in the Hockey Hall of Fame, and RBC will donate $10,000 to minor hockey in their community.  For more information and to nominate an outstanding volunteer, please visit www.rbc.com.  Nominations will be accepted until January 31, 2005.
  • The Hockey Canada Itech Design-a-Mask contest presented by Crayola where Canadian children can submit patriotic goalie mask designs. The winning designs will be worn by Team Canada’s goalies at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. Visit www.itech.com to enter.
  • Hockey Canada Week’s Minor Hockey Association Contest. Hold an event during Hockey Canada Week and submit an event summary and picture for the opportunity to win $10,000 in Easton hockey product for your minor hockey association. Go to www.hockeycanada.ca for more details.
  • Watch for a special Hockey Canada Week insert in ‘Hockey Now’ publications and select community newspapers.

There are many ways that Canadians can get involved in Hockey Canada Week in their local community; Ask local hockey teams to provide discounted tickets to minor hockey players or hold a special ceremony to recognize hockey volunteers in your area. Last season, there were hockey teams who held special events to help their community such as collecting coats for needy children and canned goods for their local food bank. The list of ways to celebrate Hockey Canada Week is endless. Visit www.hockeycanada.ca for more information on how you can be involved within your community.
