Hockey Canada's Program of Excellence (POE) Coaches to Attend Coaching Seminar in Calgary, AB From June 12-14, 2003

CALGARY, ALBERTA – Twenty-two high performance coaches and team managers involved in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence (POE) are in Calgary, AB this weekend for a three-day coaching seminar from June 12-14, 2003 at the University of Calgary, Hockey Canada announced on Wednesday.

Among those in attendance will be the recently announced coaching staffs for the National Junior Team and the National Under-18 Team.

Hockey Canada has held this POE Coaching Seminar since 1998, as a way to introduce and train coaches on a number of aspects of international hockey and short-term competitions. This annual seminar held by Hockey Canada is by invitation only.

Everyone at the seminar will take part in a number of workshops and take in presentations that cover a variety of topics, such as "Developing and Selling a Game Plan", "Player selection", "International tendencies", "Mental and Emotional Preparation", "Offensive Team Play", "Defensive Team Play", "Penalty Killing" and "Power Play".

• Stan Butler (Head Coach/Canada’s 20 National Junior Team & Brampton Battalion – OHL);

• Rob Cookson (Video Coach/Calgary Flames & Video Coach, 2003 Men’s World Championship Team);

• Marc Habscheid (Head Coach/Canada’s 2003 National Junior Team & Kelowna Rockets – WHL);

• Denis Hainault (Hockey Canada Director, High Performance);

• Wayne Halliwell (Sport Psychologist);

• Mike Kelly (Head Coach/2003 World Champion Under-18 Team);

• Blair Mackasey (Head Scout/ Canada’s National Junior and Under-18 Teams);

• Mike Pelino (Asst. coach- GM/National Men’s Team; Asst. coach, 2003 Men’s World Championship Team);

• Tom Renney (VP, Player Personnel of the NY Rangers and former Head Coach, Canada’s Men’s Olympic, World ChampionshipTeams);

• Barry Trotz (Asst. coach, 2003 Men’s World Championship Team & Head Coach, Nashville Predators)

Presentations begin on Thursday, June 12th and run through Saturday evening, June 14th at the University of Calgary in the Rozsa Building, Evans Room. Participants and selected presenters will be available for media interviews on Thursday, June 12th at 5pm, following Marc Habscheid’s presentation on "The World Junior Experience" (from 3:45-5 pm) and prior to Tom Renney’s presentation on "Developing and Selling the Game Plan (5:15-6:15 pm).
