Saint John, NB - Hockey Nova Scotia and its teams had a very successful weekend at the 2003 Atlantic Challenge Cup, played this past weekend in Bathurst, NB.

The teams from Nova Scotia went on to win the championship final in each of the four age categories (Female Under 15, Male Under 15, Male Under 16, and Female Under 18).

n the Male Under 15 Category, Nova Scotia defeated New Brunswick in an exciting final which was played at the Petit Rocher Arena. After taking a 4-1 lead into the third period, New Brunswick was able to add another goal and make it 4-2, but that would be as close as they would get. Nova Scotia was able to hang on late in the game when New Brunswick had a lot of great chances, but the solid defensive play of Nova Scotia proved to be too much for the team from New Brunswick.

At the Beresford Arena, Team Nova Scotia defeated New Brunswick in Overtime to claim the first ever Female Under 15 title at the Atlantic Challenge Cup. The game was filled with intensity and was back and forth throughout, with each team having great scoring chances. With the teams exchanging late goals, the game was forced into overtime, where Nova Scotia’s Allison Letourneau ended the game 4:43 into the extra period, giving Nova Scotia a 4-3 victory.

At the KC Irving Regional Civic Centre, the Male Under 16 Nova Scotia team continued their dominance at the 2003 Atlantic Challenge Cup by defeating Newfoundland and Labrador by a score of 7-2. The Nova Scotia team looked impressive throughout the event using their speed and size to their advantage and riding the wave of emotion to the championship.

Also played at the KC Irving Regional Civic Centre, was the Female Under 18 Championship Game which featured Nova Scotia facing off against Prince Edward Island. After defeating Nova Scotia in the round robin portion of the event, Prince Edward Island could not hold off a determined Nova Scotia team, which scored a late goal in the final to claim the gold medal with a 4-3 score. Prince Edward Island did have a few quality scoring chances as the final seconds ran off the clock, but solid goaltending and defense secured the win for Nova Scotia.

The final standings for each category are as follows:

Female Under 15 - Gold: Nova Scotia, Silver: New Brunswick, Bronze: Prince Edward Island, Fourth: Newfoundland and Labrador

Male Under 15 - Gold: Nova Scotia, Silver: New Brunswick, Bronze: Prince Edward Island, Fourth: Newfoundland and Labrador

Male Under 16 - Gold: Nova Scotia, Silver: Newfoundland and Labrador, Bronze: New Brunswick, Fourth: Prince Edward Island

Female Under 18 - Gold: Nova Scotia, Silver: Prince Edward Island, Bronze: New Brunswick, Fourth: Newfoundland and Labrador

The 2003 Atlantic Challenge Cup marks the second time that Nova Scotia has swept all categories at the event. They first accomplished this task at the 2000 event which was held in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

The Atlantic Challenge Cup is the culmination of the Program of Excellence in each of the Atlantic Provinces. The Program of Excellence at the provincial level has provided the players and staff with an opportunity to develop, learn and challenge themselves as they strive for excellence. In most cases, the provincial development process has begun in April and will now conclude with the Atlantic Challenge Cup. The players and staff have been training and preparing for the opportunity to challenge themselves against their counterparts from the other Atlantic provinces. The selected individuals will have the chance to do this, as well as to continue their development through this prestigious experience.
