Halifax to Host 2004 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship

CALGARY, AB - The city of Halifax, Nova Scotia will host, subject to IIHF final approval, the 2004 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship, the Canadian Hockey Association announced on Monday.

The 2004 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship will take place in March/April 2004 and will mark the fourth time Canada has hosted the Women's World Hockey Championship. The three previous events were held in Ottawa, ON (1990), Kitchener, ON (1997) and Mississauga, ON (2000).

"Congratulations to the City of Halifax on another successful bid to host a CHA event," said CHA president Bob Nicholson. "Halifax has a terrific tradition of hosting successful international and national competitions, including next year's World Junior Championship, and we have no doubt that the 2004 Women's World Championship will be mark another great chapter in Halifax's sport tradition."

We are thrilled to be Canada's candidate to host the 2004 Women's World Hockey Championship," said Fred MacGillivray, Chair of the 2004 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship. "On the heels on Canada's women winning gold at the Winter Olympics, women's hockey is one of the best up-and-coming sports around, and our community and province are extremely excited to get behind this event."

Halifax's successful bid is subject to final approval by the International Ice Hockey Federation, at their annual meetings in May, 2002 in Sweden.

Bid applicants submitted written presentations to the Canadian Hockey Association on or prior to to be considered for the 2004 Women's Worlds. Based on the information contained in the written presentations, the 2004 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship Site Selection Committee short-listed four bid groups in mid-March..

Four bid groups (Sport Cape Breton, Events Halifax, Ontario Women's Hockey Association/City of Hamilton, City of Vancouver) made formal presentations to the 2004 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship Site Selection Committee on in Calgary, AB. The Committee, consisting of Committee Chairman Bob Nicholson, CHA Officer Jed Ritcey and CHA Director, Female Council, Gay Hahn, made its final recommendation to the Canadian Hockey Association's Board of Directors over the weekend and the winning bid group was contacted earlier today.
