Canada's National Women's Team Advances to Gold Medal Game

MINNEAPOLIS - Canada's National Women's Team advances to the gold medal game of the 2001 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship with a 8-0 victory over Finland in one of two semi-final games Saturday, at the Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, MN.

Jennifer Botterill, of Winnipeg, MB, opened the scoring at 2:26, following a scramble in front of Finnish goaltender Tuula Puputti. Canada made it 2-0 at 8:41, as Danielle Goyette, of St-Nazaire, QC, converted a pass by Dana Antal past Puputti.

Botterill added her second goal and Colleen Sostorics, of Kennedy, SK, gave Canada a 4-0 lead through 40 minutes. Vicky Sunohara, of Scarborough, ON, Correne Bredin, of Warburg, AB, Tammy Lee Shewchuck of Saint Laurent, QC and Goyette's second of the game, all added goals in the third period as

Canada skated to a convincing 8-0 victory. Kim St. Pierre, of Châteauguay, QC, stopped all 18 shots she faced to earn her 2nd consecutive shutout.

USA and Russia face off in the other semi-final Saturday evening (7:30pm CT).

TSN and RDS will be broadcasting live the gold medal game featuring Canada and the winner of the USA/Russia semi-final. The game starts at 6 pm (Central Time) / 7 pm (Eastern Time)
