CALGARY, ALBERTA - Ken Babey, Head Coach and Athletic director at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), has been named Head Coach of the Team Canada's 2000 National Under 18 Team, the Canadian Hockey Association (CHA) and the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) announced on Wednesday.

Babey, 45, a 3M NCCP Advanced 2 (Level 4) certified coach, led the SAIT Trojans to the ACAC Championship and the Canadian Colleges Championship this past season. Babey was named ACAC Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1997. Babey also served as an assistant coach with Team Alberta at the 1998 World Under 17 Challenge.

Babey's assistant coaches with the 2000 National Under 18 Team will be Rich Brown, head coach of the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Christian La Rue, assistant coach with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

The appointments were announced following a thorough screening process carried out by the National Junior Team Policy Committee, which is made up of representatives from the Canadian Hockey League and the Canadian Hockey Association.

Assistant coach Rich Brown, 33, a 3M NCCP Advanced 1 certified coach, has just completed his first season as head coach of the OHL's Sarnia Sting. Prior to his appointment in Sarnia, he spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the St. John's Maple Leafs of the American Hockey League. Christian La Rue, 29, a 3M NCCP Advanced 1 (Level 3) certified coach, has been an assistant coach with Moncton of the QMJHL for one season, following two full seasons with Chicoutimi. For both Brown and La Rue, this will be their first coaching experience in international hockey.

Twenty-two players will attend the National Under 18 Team's training camp at the Father Bauer Arena in Calgary, AB from August 8-11, 2000. The team will depart for Europe on August 11, 2000 where they will play three exhibition games in the Czech Republic then the Under 18 Four Nations Tournament in Slovakia. Canada, the USA, Slovakia and the Czech Republic will be taking part in the Four Nations Tournament.

Within the next seven days, the CHA and the CHL will be naming an Under 18 roster as well as a list of forty players invited to the National Junior Team's Evaluation Camp from August 3-10, 2000.

The 3M National Certification Program is designed to prepare coaches from communities to national teams to develop athletic potential. The three coaches selected are examples of individuals who have dedicated time in their coaching development to Coach Certification, leveraging their knowledge to work with Canada's National Teams at an international level.
