SYDNEY, NS - Ontario's Beatrice Aeros claimed Ontario's seventh title, it's first since 1993, with a 2-1 overtime victory over Équipe Québec in the 2000 Esso Women's final Sunday, in front of an enthousiastic crowd of 3462 at C200 Arena in Sydney, NS.

Forward Lara Perks scored the winner, sent in alone by Cherie Piper, beating goaltender Kim St-Pierre. Amy Turek had opened the scoring for Ontario in the third period. Caroline Ouellette tallied for Quebec, sending the game to extra time.

"We also had a real tough round robin game with Alberta," said Ken Dufton, Ontario's Head Coach. "We knew coming here we would have to beat Alberta and Quebec and that's how it turned out."

Piper was named Ontario's Player of the Game, while Therese Brisson claimed the same honours for Équipe Quebec.

Earlier, Alberta's Oval X-Treme won the bronze medal with an 8-1 victory over Saskatchewan. Hayley Wickenheiser and Kathy Devereaux each scored twice in the victory, while Danielle Goyette added 3 assists as Alberta outshot Saskatchewan 36-18. Wickenheiser was named Player of the Game for Alberta while Andrea Steranko, Saskatchewan's lone goalscorer, claimed those honours for her side.

The Esso Women's National Hockey Championship is an annual event, presented in 2000 by the Canadian Hockey Association, the Nova Scotia Hockey Association and the CHA's premier sponsors Esso, Air Canada, Nike and Royal Bank.
