CALGARY, AB - The Canadian Hockey Association and the Canadian Hockey League named 32 players that will attend Canada's National Junior Team's Selection Camp from December 12-17 in Kitchener, ON, where players will compete for a final roster spot for the 2000 World Junior Hockey Championship in Sweden.

"I'm extremely pleased with the quality of individuals we've assembled this year," said Barry Trapp, Director, Scouting with the Canadian Hockey Association. "It's a very balanced group with a lot of talent and speed."

Following the summer evaluation camp in August, 1999, Trapp traveled throughout Canada and the United States, scouting and evaluating the top Canadian players under 20 years of age. The selection camp roster breaks down as follows:

Thirty of the thirty-two players are from the Canadian Hockey League, Canada's premier junior hockey league. This includes 13 players from the Western Hockey League, 7 from the Ontario Hockey League and 10 from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and two players who come from the U.S. College ranks. Fourteen of the players previously represented Canada as members of the Canada's National Under 18 team program.

"The Canadian Hockey League does a tremendous job developing young hockey players," said Bob Nicholson, President of the Canadian Hockey Association. "The players that have been invited are outstanding individuals that will be terrific representatives of Canada."

Canada's record in the 1990's at the World Junior Championship includes seven gold medals, with a record five in a row from 1993-1997, and one silver medal, which was won at last year's Championship in Winnipeg, MB.

"The CHL is very proud of its ties to the National Junior Team program," said Dave Branch, President of the Canadian Hockey League. "We're also very proud of the 30 young men from our three leagues that have been invited to attended this year's selection camp, and of the three coaches and two members of the support staff who also are from our leagues."

The players will gather in Kitchener, ON, on and will train and compete under the watchful eyes of Head Coach Claude Julien (Hull, LHJMQ) and assistant coaches Todd McLellan (Swift Current, WHL) and Dean Clark (Calgary, WHL), as well as Trapp.

All practices during the selection camp will take place at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex and will be open to the public. Canada will play two pre-competition games in Kitchener against OUA All-Stars, December 15 and 16, with both games starting at 6:00pm ET.

Twenty-two players will be chosen to make up Canada's final roster for the 2000 World Junior Hockey Championship which will travel to Sweden on December 17.

"I look forward to the beginning of camp," said Julien. "There will be some great competition at every position and as a coaching staff, we look forward to the challenge of assembling the best possible National Junior Team as we enter into the new millenium."

Any selection camp roster additions must be made prior to the start of the selection camp in Kitchener, as per the CHA's National Junior Team policy.
