International Ice Hockey Federation Announces 1999 World Junior Hockey Championship Awards

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) announced Tuesday it's awards at the conclusion of the 1999 World Junior Championship. The championship was held from to in Winnipeg, Manitoba and featured teams from 10 countries.

The All-Star Team, as selected by the IIHF consisted of Roberto Luongo, of Montreal, Quebec, in goal, Brian Campbell of Strathroy, Ontario and Vitali Vichnevski of Russia on defence, with Daniel Tkaczuk of Mississauga, Brian Gionta of the United States and Maxim Balmotchnykh of Russia the forwards.

The IIHF also selects the best players of the tournament by position. For this year's Championship, the best goalie was Luongo, the best defencemen, Vichnevski of Russia, and the best forward, Maxim Afinoguenov also of Russia.

The IIHF also awarded the Fair Play Award to the team with the least penalty minutes. This year's winner was gold medalist, Russia.

This year's gold medal was won by Russia, Canada winning silver, and Slovakia capturing bronze. Next year's championship will be held in Sweden, from to .
