CALGARY, AB -- Representatives from all 13 member branches of the Canadian Hockey Association will participate in a three day supervision seminar at the Best Western Inn-at-the-Centre in Fort Erie, Ontario, the Canadian Hockey Association announced Friday.

It has been recognized by the members of the Canadian Hockey Officiating Program that the supervision of officials is a development tool that must be used more effectively with the over 31,000 officials in the program. This is especially true at the minor hockey level.

"Our clinic program is the best of it's kind in the world but collectively we fail to follow up that instruction with constructive feedback by the way of supervision. Some officials don't encounter a supervisor until they are years into the program," explained Dr. Maurice Roy, the Referee-in-Chief for the Canadian Hockey Association.

"Even if we were to simply pat the new official on the back at the end of his or her game and tell the official that they gave a good effort, that feedback would go a long way in increasing the confidence level of that official," added David Baker, the Manager of Officiating for the Canadian Hockey Association. "But instead, the only feedback they tend to get is negative from the fans and the coaches. This is one of the main reasons many of our young officials leave the officiating ranks, because of the abuse. With support, perhaps more will stay and become better officials because of the feedback they will receive from supervisors," explained Baker.

The delegates will receive instruction on the philosophy of supervision, the role of the supervisor, qualities of an official, the mechanics of supervision, how to deliver the supervision and will have the opportunity to put this knowledge into action during two practical game assignments during the seminar.

"I am excited about the Canadian Hockey Association coming to Fort Erie to facilitate this seminar," said Rick Morphew, the Referee-in-Chief of the Ontario Hockey Federation. "We see this as a great asset to the entire Officiating Program, but especially for the Ontario Hockey Federation since it is being held right here in our back yard which allows us to send a large number of supervisors. This seminar can only benefit the 7,700 registered officials in Ontario."

Helping with the facilitation of this seminar along with Maurice Roy and Dave Baker are Doug Hayward, the Referee-in-Chief of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Lyle Wilhelm, the Referee-in-Chief of the Saskatchewan Hockey Association. All four individuals make up the National Referees' Committee. The Committee is fortunate to also have Dennis Pottage, the former Referee-in-Chief of the Canadian Hockey Association available to address the delegates of the seminar. Pottage has supervised both nationally and internationally.
