CALGARY -- The top on-ice officials in Canadian amateur hockey will gather in Winnipeg from Oct. 29 - Nov. 2 to share information on their craft, and discuss ways to improve all aspects of this key component of the game, the Canadian Hockey Association announced Tuesday.

The five-day, 1997 Level VI Officiating Seminar will feature several key figures in officiating, including Bryan Lewis, the National Hockey League's Director of Officiating, veteran NHL referee Kerry Fraser, sports psychologist Cal Botterill, Randy Carlyle, general manager and head coach of the Manitoba Moose and Maurice Roy, the Canadian Hockey Association's Referee-in-chief.

"This seminar is an excellent opportunity for Canadian Hockey Association Branch Referees-in-Chief to share and compare officiating development issues with international federation Referees-in-Chief, for example," said Roy. "Some of those include supervision, recruitment, clinic programs, assigning of officials and overall administration of their officiating development program."

Attending the seminar will be 22 Canadian Hockey Association Level V referees, two International referees, seven of the Canadian Hockey Association's Branch Referees-in-chief, three International Referees-in-Chief, along with a representative of the International Ice Hockey Federation's referee committee.

Some of the key sessions on the agenda include one on Supervision - what the role of the supervisor is and how it is perceived; Officiating from a Coach's Perspective; Handling Pressure; and Fitness and Skating testing. There also will be a session on Dealing with the Media, with guest speaker Scott Taylor, the lead sports columnist with the Winnipeg Free Press.

The Level VI seminar continues a tradition that began in 1972, when the first National Referee Planning Seminar was held. The National Referees' Certification Program has been operating since 1973, with the level system -- Level I to VI -- the foundation for the training and development of amateur hockey officials across Canada. Some of the officials who have graduated from this program include NHL referees Lance Roberts, Rob Schick, Don Van Massenhoven, Steve Walkom and Richard Trottier, as well as Olympic referees Charlie Banfield, George McCorry and Kevin Muench.
