Game Story

YAREMCHUK’S HAT TRICK SENDS MINTOS TO TELUS CUP FINAL

DAVID BRIEN

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Lance Yaremchuk had a hat trick and added an assist to lead the Prince Albert Mintos to a 6-3 win over the Okanagan Rockets on Saturday and a spot in the gold medal game at the 2014 TELUS Cup.
It’s the third time in four all-time trips to Canada’s National Midget Championship that the Mintos will play for gold; they won the national title in 2006 and 2007.

They’ll face the winner of the Châteauguay-Toronto semifinal in the Sunday’s final (3 p.m. MT, TSN), while the Rockets will meet that game’s loser for bronze (11 a.m. MT).

Teal Sobkowicz, Wyatt Grant and Loch Morrison had the other goals for Prince Albert, which won despite allowing as many goals in the game as they did in the entire preliminary round.

Connor Ingram made 30 saves in his first start since Wednesday.

Tyson Jost and Tanner Campbell had a goal and an assist each for the Rockets, and Kristian Blumenschein also scored for Okanagan, which scored twice on the power play in the third period to briefly pull within a goal at 4-3.

Prince Albert opened the scoring just 4:08 in; Ryan Duret fed Keegan Kjargaard in front, and while the puck rolled off his stick on the shot attempt, he was able to spin and find Sobkowicz, who had an empty net for the 1-0 lead.

Yaremchuk doubled the advantage just over seven minutes later, burying the rebound of a Matthew Parsons shot, but Blumenschein cut the lead in half with just five seconds left in the period, spinning in the slot and beating Ingram.

The Okanagan goal ended the Mintos’ shutout streak at 146 minutes and 35 seconds, dating to Wednesday.
The Rockets turned on the offence in the second period, outshooting Prince Albert 13-5, but the Mintos would score the lone goal of the middle frame, off the stick of Grant ; the Mintos forward gathered in a rebound at the side of the Okanagan net and lifted a shot past a sprawling Brendan Barry at 5:33.

The lead grew to three in the first minute of the second period, with Yaremchuk sneaking a shot through the five-hole of Barry on the power play, giving the Mintos a seemingly-commanding lead at 4-1.

But the Rockets chipped away on the man advantage; Campbell made a beautiful cross-ice feed to Jost, who went over the shoulder of Ingram at 3:48, and Campbell did the scoring himself at 7:19, selling the pass before going through Ingram’s legs.

Prince Albert managed to quell the Okanagan momentum, however, and got a little insurance just less than nine minutes to go; after a mad scramble behind the Rockets’ net, the puck popped onto the stick of Morrison, who knocked in second of the tournament.

Yaremchuk completed his hat trick into an empty net with 2:16 left.
