NOTRE DAME HOUNDS WIN GOLD MEDAL AT 2010 TELUS CUP;
ST. JOHN’S FOG DEVILS WIN BRONZE

LÉVIS, Que. – The Notre Dame Hounds have won their second-consecutive TELUS Cup following a 3-2 victory over the Mississauga Reps on Sunday afternoon in Lévis, Que in the gold medal game of the National Midget Championship.

Liam O’Brien (Halifax, N.S.) picked a great time to score his first goal of the tournament at 7:56 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie and give Notre Dame the lead. Slater Koekkoek (Mountain, Ont.) and Marcus Messier (Canmore, Alta.) also scored for the Hounds, who call Wilcox, Sask., home.

Eric Locke (Toronto, Ont.) scored both goals for the Reps, who played in their first National Midget Championship this week. Mississauga opened a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Koekkoek answered back later in the frame. The teams went into the third tied at 1-1. Malcolm Subban (Toronto, Ont.) made 55 saves in the Mississauga net to keep his team in the game.

The win gives Notre Dame four gold medals at the National Midget Championship, which ties it with the Regina Pat Canadians for most all-time.

In Sunday’s bronze medal game, the St. John’s Fog Devils earned a 5-4 victory over the Gaulois du Collège Antoine-Girouard, ending Quebec’s 12-year streak with a medal. Zach O’Brien (St. John’s, N.L.) led the Fog Devils with three goals in the second period. St. John’s natives Marcus Power and Dylan Brake also scored for the winners. Alexandre Lemieux (Beloeil, Que.), Sébastien Sylvestre (Boucherville, Que.), Guillaume Mollicone (Boucherville, Que.) and Dominic Beauchemin (Varennes, Que.) scored for Antoine-Girouard.
