MAY 21-24, 1999 - CHARLOTTETOWN, PE

The 82nd Annual Canadian Hockey Association Annual General Meeting got underway on Friday night here at the Prince Edward Hotel in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Over 400 delegates from coast to coast in Canada are in attendance at this year's meetings, representing the various hockey administration and development levels of hockey in Canada.

1999 Board of Directors

Wayne Russell, of St. John's, Newfoundland, has been named as chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Hockey Association. Russell replaces Bob MacKinnon, of Oakville, ON, who will remain as an
officer with the title of Past chairman after serving his two year term as chairman of the Board. René Marcil, of St-Louis-de-France, QC, and President of Hockey Quebec, was also elected as an officer on the Board of Directors. Marcil joins Russell, MacKinnon, Sheldon Lanchbery, of Deloraine, MB, Don Brown,of Kanata, ON, Allan Matthews, of Williams Lake, BC and Jed Ritcey of Truro, NS as well as President Bob Nicholson to make up the CHA Officers .

1999 Award Winners

Jamie McDonald, of Kitchener, ON, received the Gordon Juckes Award, which recognizes the outstanding contribution of an individual to the development of amateur hockey in Canada at the National Level. Through McDonald's leadership and vision for coaching, many coaching development programs were established over the past 10 years that will act as his legacy to coaching development in Canada.

René Marcil received the Volunteer of the Year Award, which recognizes an outstanding volunteer who has contributed to amateur hockey and the CHA. Marcil, 48, has been involved in hockey as a volunteer for over 20 years, as a coach and as an administrator and he has been the President of Hockey Québec since 1992.

Karen Wallace, of Surrey, BC, was the recipient of the Female Breakthrough Award, which is in honor of an individual who has made a significant contribution to the promotion and/or development of female hockey in Canada. Wallace chaired the Female Council for a number of years and was prominent in Female hockey's development over that time.

Mike Pytyck, of Thunder Bay, ON, and George Trainor, Charlottetown, PEI were named as the CHA Order of Merit recipients. The Order of Merit was instituted in 1960 to "honor those individuals who for many years have served amateur hockey faithfully, having participated as players, served as coaches and association members, and made outstanding contributions to Canadian amateur hockey."

Pytyck, 67, has been involved in hockey for almost 40 years, having served as an official, a coach, a board member as well as assisting in the organisation of numerous events in Ontario. Trainor, currently Vice-President of hockey, PEIHA, was chairman of the 1999 CHA AGM Host Committee. He has committed numerous volunteer hours over the years to the development of hockey in PEI, the maritimes and Canada, in particular in the area of junior hockey.
