CANADA’S NATIONAL MEN’S SUMMER UNDER-18 TEAM WINS GOLD MEDAL AT 2009 MEMORIAL OF IVAN HLINKA; PLAYERS AND STAFF TO RETURN TO CANADA ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 16

BRECLAV, Czech Republic – Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team has won the gold medal at the 2009 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament, defeating Russia 9-2 in Saturday’s gold medal game in Breclav. It is the fifth time in six years Canada has won the tournament, formerly known as the Junior World Cup.

On Saturday, Canada got four goals in the second period to turn a tight, one-goal game into a runaway as it beat Russia for gold for the second year in a row. Brandon Gormley (Murray River, P.E.I./Moncton, QMJHL), Jeffrey Skinner (Markham, Ont./Kitchener, OHL) and Tyler Seguin (Brampton, Ont./Plymouth, OHL) led the way with two goals apiece. Jaden Schwartz (Wilcox, Sask./Notre Dame, SJHL) and Ryan Spooner (Kanata, Ont./Peterborough, OHL) and Canadian captain John McFarland (Richmond Hill, Ont./Sudbury, OHL) also scored.
