There will be a new champion at the TELUS Cup.
Brandon Warmington scored in overtime to give the Sault Ste. Marie North Stars an 8-7 win in Game 4 of the
Great North Midget League championship on Sunday night, giving the North Stars a 3-1 series win over the
Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves.
The Wolves won the National Midget Championship one year ago in Arnprior, ON, giving the Central Region
its first gold medal ever at the national championship.
Goals from Jake Wright and Joel McCauley had given the North Stars a 7-6 lead early in the third period,
but Ryan Johnston – part of last year’s championship team – scored for Sudbury with just under nine minutes
left to force overtime, setting up Warmington’s heroics.
The North Stars advance to the Central Regional in Burlington, ON from March 30-April 5, with a spot in
the 2009 TELUS Cup in Selkirk, MB on the line. Sault Ste. Marie is no stranger to the national championship –
they took part in the 2007 national championship in Red Deer, AB.
