by Murray Green – Camrose Canadian

The Battle River School Division (BRSD) will be out in full force during the 2008 World Junior A Challenge, with schools in Camrose cheering on a team for the duration of the week-long tournament.

“The students will decorate their school in the colours of their team for the week,” says Doug MacKay, chair of the school and minor hockey committee. “At the end of the tournament, each school will receive a signed jersey from their team.”

The schools taking part include:

Charlie Killam School (Grade 7 only) – Germany
Chester Ronning School – United States
Jack Stuart School – Russia
St. Patrick’s School – Belarus
Sifton School – Canada East
Sparling School – Canada West

Some of the schools involved with have WJAC-based curriculum for the week, including learning about the countries they will be supporting, and making goalie masks in art class.

BRSD schools taking part will have the opportunity to receive a visit from one of the Canadian entries at the WJAC, view the Stanley Cup and win one of 10 sets of 25 tickets to a preliminary-round game.

In addition to the schools getting involved, Camrose Minor Hockey (CMH) will also play a role at the 2008 World Junior A Challenge.

CMH players will be cleaning the stands at the Edgeworth Centre after games, along with carrying the flags on the ice prior to the game and scraping the ice during timeouts.

As well, players will have the chance to be a junior trainer with one of Canada’s teams during one of the games during the week, and teams will have the opportunity to win a practice with Canada East or Canada West.

Also on the schedule for the week:

A Hockey Canada coaches clinic
A Hockey Canada Skills Camp for Atom and Novice-aged players
