WINNIPEG, MB – Hockey Canada, in partnership with Hockey Manitoba and the Winnipeg Minor Hockey
Association, announced on Friday the schedule and ticket information for the 2009 TELUS Cup, which will be
held in Selkirk, MB from April 20-26, 2009.
The TELUS Cup, Canada’s National Midget Championship, will return to Manitoba for the first time since
1994, when it was held in Brandon. The event kicks off on April 20, 2009 with three games on the schedule.
The gold medal game will be held on April 26 at 4 p.m. CDT, a game that will be shown on TSN/RDS, Hockey
Canada’s official broadcasters.
“We can’t wait for the puck to drop on April 20, 2009,” says Rob Cox, chair of the 2009 TELUS Cup host
committee. “Fans in Selkirk are going to see the future stars of the game battle for one of Canada’s most
sought-after national championships.”
The 2009 TELUS Cup will include the host Winnipeg Thrashers, along with five other Midget AAA teams
representing all regions of Canada. The Thrashers, who won the silver medal at the 2008 TELUS Cup in
Arnprior, ON, will play their round-robin games each evening at the 2009 TELUS Cup, giving local fans the
chance to fill the rink and cheer on their team.

The local organizing committee has unveiled the first ticket package for the 2009 TELUS Cup. A full-event
pass is now available for $79, giving fans access to each and every game at the 2009 TELUS Cup, including the
gold medal game.
“You can feel the excitement in the air,” says Scott Smith, Hockey Canada’s chief operating officer. “The
2009 TELUS Cup is rapidly approaching. We’re thrilled to have partnered with Hockey Manitoba and the Winnipeg
Minor Hockey Association and we’re confident that Selkirk will put on a great show.”
"As a premier partner of Hockey Canada, TELUS is delighted to support athletes in events such as the TELUS
Cup,” says Steve Podborski, TELUS executive director of sport marketing. “TELUS is honoured to be supporting
Canada’s National Midget Championship and wishes every team competing for the 2009 TELUS Cup the very best of
luck.”
It was also announced on Friday that Darren Helm, a member of Canada’s gold-medal-winning 2007 National
Junior Team, a member of the 2008 Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings, and a native of St. Andrews, MB,
will be the official spokesperson for the 2009 TELUS Cup. Helm played Midget AAA hockey for the Thrashers
before moving on to play for Selkirk in Junior B and the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL.
“The success that Darren Helm has enjoyed is certainly an inspiration to all minor hockey players in
Manitoba,” says Peter Woods, executive director of Hockey Manitoba. “It demonstrates that hard work equals
success. It also allows young players to have a closer connection to reaching their goals when you know
someone who has already achieved it.”
In the coming months, the 2009 TELUS Cup host committee, along with Hockey Canada, will announce more
details of the event, including single-game ticket sales.
