CALGARY, AB - Forty of the top male players born in 1991 will hit the ice in Calgary between August 2nd
and 5th for the National Men's Summer Under-18 Team selection camp.
The players will be competing for spots on Canada's 22-man roster that will compete at the 2008 Memorial of
Ivan Hlinka in Czech Republic and Slovakia from August 12-16. Canada has won three of the past four summer
under-18 tournaments, which was formerly called the Junior World Cup.
The 40 players will be split into two teams - Team Red and Team White - and will practice at different
times at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena. Team Red will face off against Team White in three intersquad
games, scheduled for Sunday, August 3rd and Monday, August 4th at 6 p.m., and Tuesday, August 5th at noon.
All games are at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena. On August 5th, Hockey Canada will finalize a roster of 22
players.
The head coach of Canada's National Men's Summer Under-18 Team is Bill Peters (Spokane, WHL) and the
assistant coaches are Steve Spott (Kitchener, OHL) and André Tourigny (Rouyn-Noranda, QMJHL). Canada will
attempt to rebound from its fourth-place finish of 2007.
Canada's coaching staff will work with Al Murray, Hockey Canada's head scout for National Men's Teams, in
finalizing a roster of 22 players. Team Canada's players and staff will depart Calgary on August 6th for
Europe to prepare for the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka.
Canada will face Team USA in Trnava, Slovakia on August 9th and then Canada will play Czech Republic in
Breclav, Czech Republic on August 10th in exhibition action prior to the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka. There
will be no TV or radio coverage of the event. Hockey Canada's official website, www.hockeycanada.ca, is the
place to find all Team Canada game scores and summaries.
The National Men's Summer Under-18 Team is one of two U18 teams run by Hockey Canada on an annual basis.
Canada won gold at the 2008 IIHF World Under-18 Men's Championship in April. The Under-18 program is the
second step of Hockey Canada's Program of Excellence, which also includes the Under-17 regional and
provincial programs and the National Junior Team.
