GRETZKY NAMED TO IIHF CENTENNIAL ALL-STAR TEAM

As part of 100th anniversary celebrations, the IIHF announced on Saturday night the six members of the Centennial All-Star Team – including Canadian legend Wayne Gretzky.

Gretzky received 38 votes to earn the centre spot on the team, far outgaining Swede Sven Tumba and Russian legend Igor Larionov, who were tied for second with three votes each.

The Brantford, ON native – the NHL’s all-time leading scorer – represented Canada on eight occasions, including four Canada Cups, one IIHF World Championship, one World Cup of Hockey, one Olympic Winter Games and one IIHF World Junior Championship.

He racked up 99 points (34 goals, 65 assists) in 61 career games wearing the maple leaf, winning three Canada Cups, an IIHF World Championship bronze medal and an IIHF World Junior Championship bronze medal.

Joining Gretzky on the IIHF Centennial All-Star Team were Soviet forwards Sergei Makarov and Valeri Kharlamov, Russian defenseman Vyacheslav Fetisov – who received a team-high 54 votes – Swedish defenseman Borje Salming and Soviet goaltender Vladislav Tretiak.
