CAMROSE KODIAKS, HUMBOLDT BRONCOS
TO PLAY FOR 2008 RBC CUP

CORNWALL, ON – After Saturday’s semi-finals, the championship game is set at the 2008 RBC Cup.

The Camrose Kodiaks (Pacific) and Humboldt Broncos (West) will battle for Canada’s 38th National Junior A Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Cornwall Civic Complex after coming out victorious in their respective semi-finals. Camrose topped the Pictou County Weeks Crushers (East) 3-0 in the early semi-final, while Humboldt knocked off the Cornwall Colts (Host) 6-1 in the late game.

These two teams are no stranger to each other.

Five years ago, the Kodiaks and Broncos met in Charlottetown, PE in the championship game of the 2003 RBC Royal Bank Cup. The Broncos got a pair of goals from Matt Brown and 29 saves from Sean Connors as they topped Camrose 3-1 to win their first, and only, national championship.

The Kodiaks are back in the championship game for the fourth time in eight years, but have only one championship to show for it – they defeated the host Flin Flon Bombers 5-0 in the final game of the 2001 Royal Bank Cup.

In their semi-final, the Kodiaks got first period goals from Andrew MacWilliam and Jesse Todd and 17 saves from Allen York – named the tournament’s top goaltender for the second straight year at Friday night’s awards banquet – to defeat the Crushers. York has a miniscule 0.75 goals against average in the tournament and, with four goals allowed in five games, Camrose is within striking distance of the all-time RBC Cup record for fewest goals allowed in one tournament – the South Surrey Eagles allowed just seven on their march to the 1997 national championship.

The Broncos overwhelmed the Colts for the second time in eight days to advance to the championship game. After defeating the hosts 7-0 to open the tournament last Saturday, Humboldt got a pair of goals from Edward Gale and singles from Tory Allan, Laurent Benjamin, Tanner Vandesype and Matthew Rintoul in their win. The Broncos have scored a tournament-high 24 goals in their five games, setting up a classic offense vs. defense battle on Sunday afternoon.

The round-robin contest between the two teams was arguably the best of the tournament, as the Kodiaks scored a pair of third-period powerplay goals to pull out a 2-1 win on Monday afternoon, ending Humboldt’s eight-game winning streak. Joe Colborne and Dylan Olsen scored for Camrose, while Dane Lindskog added a powerplay goal of his own for the Broncos.

The puck will drop for the gold medal game at 1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT on Sunday, and can be seen LIVE on TSN/RDS, the official broadcaster of Hockey Canada.
