2008 RBC CUP AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED
- SEMI-FINALS SET FOR SATURDAY -

CORNWALL, ON - The 2008 RBC Cup, Canada's 38th National Junior A Championship, held its awards banquet on Friday night in Cornwall, ON. The recipients of all six individual awards were announced at the banquet.

The awards were based on the tournament's round-robin, which ran from Saturday to Thursday.

The 2008 RBC Cup award winners are:

Most Valuable Player (Roland Mercier Trophy) - Darcy Findlay - Cornwall Colts
Top Goaltender - Allen York - Camrose Kodiaks
Top Forward - Jeremy Welsh - Oakville Blades
Top Defensive Player - Brady Wacker - Humboldt Broncos
Most Sportsmanlike Player (Tubby Smaltz Trophy) - Andre Herman - Camrose Kodiaks

In addition, Camrose Kodiaks forward Joe Colborne was presented with the 2008 RBC Canadian Junior Hockey League Player of the Year award, which was originally announced on May 1st. In his second season with the Kodiaks, Colborne finished second in AJHL scoring with 90 points (33 goals, 57 assists) and took part in the 2007 CJAHL Prospects Game and 2008 AJHL All-Star Game. He also won a gold medal with Canada West at the 2007 World Junior A Challenge in Trail and Nelson, BC.

This is the second time Colborne - who is ranked 28th in NHL Central Scouting's final ranking for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft - has accepted an award at the National Junior A Championship. He was named the most sportsmanlike player at the 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup in Prince George, BC.

Danny Mireault of the Action de Joliette (Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Quebec) was on hand in Cornwall to receive the RBC National Junior A Scholarship. Mireault was chosen from the 10 finalists - one from each of the Canadian Junior Hockey League's member leagues - to receive the $5,000 scholarship.

The RBC Cup Legacy Scholarships were also handed out at the awards banquet. Established following the 2004 RBC Royal Bank Cup in Grande Prairie, AB and contributed to following successful National Junior A Championships in Weyburn, SK and Prince George, BC, these $500 scholarships are awarded to one graduating 20-year-old player from each of the five participating teams.

The RBC Cup Legacy Scholarship winners are:

Camrose Kodiaks - Owen Chatwin
Cornwall Colts - David Chubb
Humboldt Broncos - Jordan Schindel
Oakville Blades - Oliver Wren
Pictou County Weeks Crushers - Scott Lavigne

After an exciting week of round-robin play, the semi-finals are set for Saturday, May 10th. The Camrose Kodiaks face the Pictou County Weeks Crushers at 2:00 p.m. ET, followed by the Humboldt Broncos taking on the host Cornwall Colts at 7:00 p.m. ET.

The gold medal game will go at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 11th. It can be seen LIVE on TSN, the official broadcaster of Hockey Canada.

Both semi-finals can be seen LIVE via webcast at www.hockeycanada.ca and www.telushockeycanada.com.
