HALIFAX – Eric Staal scored four goals and linemate Martin St-Louis had five assists as Canada's offence
got on track in a big way in a 10-1 win over Germany on Saturday at the 2008 IIHF World Championship,
clinching a berth in the quarterfinals.
Three of Staal's four goals came in the second period, when the defending world champions scored five times
to ice their fifth straight victory at the world championship.
Staal and St-Louis each finished the game with five points, one shy of the Canadian record for most points in
a game set by Eric Lindros in Austria in 1993. St-Louis tied a Canadian record for most assists in one game,
originally set by John MacLean in 1989.
Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley, Patrick Sharp, Derek Roy, Jamal Mayers and Mike Green also scored for Canada, now
winners of 14 straight games at the world championship dating back to last year in Moscow.
Canada finishes the qualifying round on Monday against Finland, which can be seen LIVE on TSN, beginning at
3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT.
The quarterfinals are set for Wednesday. Canada's opponent has not been decided.
Head coach Ken Hitchcock and his staff wanted to see some else besides the big line of Heatley, Rick Nash and
Ryan Getzlaf get on the scoreboard and the Canadians answered the call for secondary scoring.
Spezza started the rout on a 2-on-1 break early on, scoring on a short wrist shot at 5:14. Heatley then
collected his seventh goal in five games when he stayed with his initial shot and snapped the rebound in at
13:35.
St-Louis was the workhorse on Staal's first goal. The Tampa Bay Lightning superstar was behind the German
goal when he spotted a wide-open Staal and slipped him a pass. Staal finished the play off with a backhand
shot that produced a 3-0 lead at 16:05.
Sharp sent the Germans to the dressing room down by four goals when his pass hit a German skate and wound up
in the net at 19:05.
The Canadians were just as strong on the puck in the second period, with Staal leading the charge with a hat
trick. He scored at 3:42. 8:20 and 15:30 to compete the four-goal performance.
St. Louis collected his fifth assist at 1:47 of the third when Green drilled his pass into the German goal to
make it 10-0.
Canadian netminder Cam Ward didn't have much in the way of work all night and could not be faulted on the
Germans’ lone goal. After making the original save off a shot from Frank Hordler, the rebound hit the
German’s skate and bounced past Ward midway through the final frame, providing the final scoreline.

ARMSTRONG SAYS BEST IS YET TO COME FOR CANADA

Doug Armstrong knows as well as anyone that Canada hasn't played its best hockey at the 2008 IIHF World
Championship. But the team's affable assistant general manager isn't about to press the panic button.
"The competition is a lot closer than people think and people give it credit for," said Armstrong. "I just
saw the Finland-Latvia result and heard about Belarus-Russia and that says a lot about the level of
competition."
The Finns scored on their 61st shot to beat Latvia 2-1 on Friday, while Russia needed a shootout to beat
Belarus 4-3. These results came a day after Canada got a late goal from Rick Nash to beat Norway 2-1.
"Everybody has goaltending," said Armstrong. "It is just like the U.S. basketball team in the Olympics. They
used to mop up, the Dream Team mopped up, but the other countries have closed the gap. It's the same
here."
Canada's next game is against Germany on Saturday (LIVE on TSN at 3:20 p.m. ET/12:20 p.m. PT) and they finish
out the qualifying round of the two-week competition against Finland on Monday.
Armstrong said the Canadian staff hopes they soon start to get some secondary scoring to take the pressure of
the top line of Nash, Ryan Getzlaf and Dany Heatley.
"They aren't starting to squeeze the sticks yet but it would be nice to see some guys get on the board," he
said.
The Canadians got a bit of a dress rehearsal for the game against Germany from the Norwegians. Canada can't
expect to have a lot of room to get their offensive attack on track – the Germans like to slow the pace down,
clog up and middle of the ice, and capitalize on turnovers.
"They like to slow it down, not give any room down the middle of the ice," he said. "We (the Canadian staff)
have watched them a couple of times and know what to expect. The guys know they will have to be patient."
Canada has a 37-2-1 all-time record against Germany, including a 3-2 win one year ago.
Canada has won four straight games at the '08 tournament and takes a 13-game winning streak dating back to
last year in Moscow.
"We really want that number one seed coming out of the qualifying round," said Armstrong. "That's really
important and we know we can get it."
