HALIFAX – Dany Heatley continued to rewrite Hockey Canada's record book as Canada
scored a 7-0 victory over Latvia on Sunday for its second straight win at the 2008 IIHF World
Championship.
Heatley had a goal and three assists for his second straight four-point game and moved past Steve Yzerman,
Canada's general manager, into top place on Canada's all-time scoring list at the world championship with 40
points.
Heatley opened the tournament with three goals and an assist in a 5-1 win over Slovenia, the hat trick
earning him the title of Canada's all-time leading goal scorer at the event.
The line of Heatley, Ryan Getzlaf and Rick Nash continued to have its way offensively. They followed an
eight-point effort against Slovenia with an eight-point night against Latvia, with Heatley notching four
points, while Nash had two goals and Getzlaf two assists.
Heatley became Canada's top point-producer at the IIHF's showcase event when he drew an assist on the second
goal of the game by Nash, at 12:20 of the second period.
Nash now takes a six-game point scoring streak for Canada's National Men's Team into Tuesday's game against
the United States. The game can be seen on TSN, beginning at 3:20 pm ET/12:20 p.m. PT.
"It is a lot of fun," Nash told TSN during an interview in the second intermission. "The key is to get better
as the games go on and I feel our line is doing that."
Goaltender Pascal Leclaire, who played three years of Major Junior hockey with the Halifax Mooseheads of the
Quebec Major Junior League, got the win. Leclaire didn't have a busy night but he was brilliant early in the
third to preserve the shutout.
Patrick Sharp, Mike Green, Chris Kunitz and Martin St. Louis also scored.
The outcome was never in doubt and although the Latvians had visions of making it a close game, those visions
were snuffed out in the second period when the defending world champions scored three goals in a span of
1:39.
Sharp, who is representing Canada for the first time, opened the scoring at 2:35 of the first when he snapped
a rebound into Latvia's net.
Green followed with a goal at 3:45 on a wonderful individual effort, and Heatley made it 3-0 at 12:15 with
his fourth goal of the tournament and his second point of the game.
The rout was officially on in the second period.
Heatley tied Yzerman atop Canada's all-time scoring chart when he set Nash up for his first goal of the game,
at 1:03 of the second.
St. Louis made it 5-0 at 2:00, and Kunitz's goal at 2:42 completed the short scoring spree and chased
starting goalie Edgars Masalskis.
Canada has now won 11 straight games at the world championship, dating back to 2007s gold medal effort in
Moscow.
