Despite losing out in the second round of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League playoffs, the Weeks Crushers will play for Canada’s National Junior A Championship. The Crushers took advantage of hosting the Fred Page Cup and knocked off the champions of three leagues – the LHJAAAQ (Sherbrooke), MJAHL (Yarmouth) and CJHL (Pembroke) to win the franchise’s second Fred Page Cup, its first since 2002, when it won the RBC Royal Bank Cup as the Halifax Oland Exports. A good team during the regular season – the Crushers finished fifth in the 12-team MJAHL with a 35-21-1-1 record – Weeks was led by its offense, the second-ranked unit in the league. Leading the way offensively for Weeks was the duo of Jordan Knox, the 2006 CJAHL Player of the Year acquired from Summerside in early January, and Ryan Stoddard. Knox finished as the MJAHL’s leading scorer, with 86 points in just 48 games, while Stoddard finished third with 80 points. After a third-place finish in the Bent Division, Weeks drew the second-place Truro Bearcats in the opening round of the MJAHL playoffs, and despite finishing 12 points behind the Bearcats during the regular season, the Crushers eliminated Truro In six games. Riding a four-game winning streak into the division final against Yarmouth, the Crushers took game one on the road before faltering, dropping four straight to see the MJAHL portion of their season come to an end. Twenty-five days later, the Crushers returned to the ice to open the Fred Page Cup, and were welcomed with a 7-1 drubbing by the Pembroke Lumber Kings. But Weeks rebounded, scoring a 3-2 win over Sherbrooke and gaining a measure of revenge against Yarmouth, topping the Mariners 6-4 to earn home ice for the semi-final against their MJAHL rivals. Down 3-1 entering the third period, the Crushers scored three unanswered goals to win 4-2, and repeated the performance one day later in the championship game against Pembroke, scoring three times unanswered in the third period to win 4-1 and earn a spot in the 2008 RBC Cup.
