POULIN POTS GAME WINNER FOR TEAM CANADA
Calgary, AB – Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Montreal, CWHL) scored the game-winning goal as
Canada’s National Women’s Team beat the Calgary Buffaloes midget AAA boys team 3-2 on Sunday at Father David
Bauer Olympic Arena.
It was the fourth and final game for the National Women’s Team at its January evaluation camp. Canada
moved to 4-0 with the win, with previous victories coming against the Calgary Royals, UFA Bisons and Calgary
Edge.
Poulin’s goal came at 5:33 of the third period, when she converted on a 2-on-1 with Gina Kingsbury
(Rouyn-Noranda, QC/Calgary, WWHL) to make it 3-1 Canada. Kingsbury made a perfect pass to Poulin, who
backhanded the puck in under the Buffaloes’ Kris Moore. Sabrina Harbec (Montreal, QC/St. Lawrence Univ.,
ECAC) started the play with a pass to Kingsbury in the neutral zone.
The Buffaloes made it 3-2 with seven minutes to play as Chris Collins beat Canada’s Kim St-Pierre
(Chateauguay, QC/Montreal, CWHL). But that was as close as the Buffaloes would get.
Canada’s other goals were scored by Kelly Bechard (Sedley, SK/Calgary, WWHL) and Caroline Ouellette
(Montreal, QC/Minnesota, WWHL). Bechard’s came in the first period when her wrist shot hit the far post and
went it past the Buffaloes’ starting goaltender, Sean Cahill. Ouellette scored 16 seconds into the third
period with her team on the power play. Ouellette took the puck in her own end, streaked down the right side,
and snapped the puck in.
St-Pierre made 19 saves for the win.
The January evaluation camp was a week-long event and is one of the tools used by Hockey Canada to select
a team for the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Championship (April 4-12 in Harbin, China).
The team will be named in early March.
