WC.026
Sept 11, 2004
• Canada has advanced to the Finals of all six prior World Cup of Hockey/Canada Cup tournaments … Canada
has now advanced to the Semifinals in four of the last five major senior international tournaments … The 2002
World Championships were the lone exception … Canada has advanced to the Semifinals in 14 of the 17 major
international tournaments since 1993.
• Due to Canada's depth at center, captain Mario Lemieux has skated on the left wing on a line with Joe Sakic
and Jarome Iginla … "I played left wing before with Ron Francis and Jaromir Jagr for a year and a half,"
Lemieux said of the Pittsburgh Penguins' line that dominated the 1991 and 1992 Stanley Cups. "I played right
wing in 1987 (when Canada won the Canada Cup) with Wayne Gretzky. So, I can move around a little bit and
adjust to the situation. I do feel comfortable. I spent most of my hockey career on the left side, on the
boards, so it doesn't affect my play at all."
• Canada used the exact same line-up in its Quarterfinal game as it did its round-robin finale … Canada
line combinations (from Wednesday's Quarterfinal against Slovakia)
Forwards:
Lemieux - Sakic - Iginla
Smyth - Lecavalier - Heatley
Gagne - Richards - St. Louis
Draper - Thornton - Doan
Defense Pairings:
Regehr - Niedermayer
Brewer - Foote
Hannan - Bouwmeester
• Canada has scored goals in nine of its 12 full periods played during the tournament … Canada has
registered four multi-goal periods, highlighted by its four-goal second period in the Quarterfinals against
Slovakia … By comparison, Canada has only allowed goals in three of its 12 periods played, with no one
multi-goal periods allowed.
