TAKE TWO MINUTES AND CELEBRATE
OFFICIATING WEEK DURING PUCK DROP ‘07

CALGARY – They are the third team on the ice, and this week the referees and linesmen are recognized as Hockey Canada celebrates Officiating Week during week four of Puck Drop '07.

Do you want to learn how to become an official? Do you want to find out what it takes to reach the highest level of officiating in Canada?

Last season, more than 35,000 Canadians wore the stripes at every level of the game, from Novice to Major Junior, and 16 Canadian officials were chosen to work at International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) world championships.

“Canadian officials were front and centre at a number of IIHF events in 2006-07, and that’s a testament to the system we have in place,” says Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson. “We continue to develop high-level officials, on the local, national and international stages.”

Next May, during the 2008 IIHF World Hockey Championship in Halifax, NS and Quebec City, QC, Hockey Canada will hold the 2008 Hockey Canada Officiating Summit, which will bring together officials from across the country to discuss issues in the game and share ideas.

During Officiating Week, registration information for the 2008 Hockey Canada Officiating Summit will be released, so be sure to visit www.hockeycanada.ca/PuckDrop07.

Hockey Canada, in participation with its 13 Branches and thousands of minor hockey associations across the country, will celebrate the more than 550,000 players who take to the ice each season, along with the coaches, officials and administrators who shape the game, during the five-week event. Each week during Puck Drop '07 will be themed differently, celebrating unique aspects of the game.
