CANADA’S NATIONAL WOMEN’S TEAMS
SWEEP SERIES WITH USA

Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team and National Women’s Under-22 Team swept their respective series with the USA last week, finishing with a perfect 6-0 record.

The National Women’s Under-18 Team, in its first competition ever, outscored the Americans 12-4 on its way to a three-game sweep in Ottawa, ON, clinching the top seed for the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship, to be held in January 2008 in Canada (host city to be determined).

The National Women’s Under-22 Team recorded the first three-game sweep of the USA in the nine-year history of the program, defeating an American team, in Lake Placid, NY, that included six members of the USA’s National Women’s Team. The next competition for the team will be the 2008 Air Canada Cup in Germany, a tournament Canada has won five consecutive years, losing only one game.

Both series included an overtime game – Carolyne Prevost (Sarnia, ON) played the hero for the Under-18s in the second game of their series, while Samantha Hunt (Calgary, AB) clinched the sweep for the U22s with an OT winner in Sunday’s final game.

“Last week’s games were proof that the future of women’s hockey in Canada is in good hands,” said Melody Davidson, the head coach of the National Women’s Under-18 Team, as well as general manager of Canada’s National Women’s Teams. “We could not be more proud of the way our players performed, and the skill and maturity they showed.”
