TURRIS NAMED RBC FINANCIAL GROUP CANADIAN JUNIOR A PLAYER OF THE YEAR

The Canadian Junior A Hockey League (CJAHL) is pleased to announce that Kyle Turris of the BCHL’s Burnaby Express has been named as the RBC Financial Group Canadian Junior A Player of the Year.

The 17-year-old Turris scored a league-high 66 goals for the Express in 2006/07, one of only three BCHLers to score 50 goals, and 15 more than runners-up Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Wade MacLeod of Merritt, who each scored 51.

Turris’ 121 points were good for second in the league, seven points behind BCHL scoring champ Tyler Bozak of Victoria, and his 19-game point scoring streak was a league-high.

He also finished tied for the league lead in playoff scoring with 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists), impressive considering he played one less postseason round than the rest of the top 10 scorers.

For his efforts, Turris was awarded the Coastal Conference’s MVP award, yet another piece for an ever-growing trophy case.

The New Westminster, BC native was awarded the Coastal Conference’s Rookie of the Year award in 2005/06 after scoring 36 goals and adding 36 assists in 57 games. Turris’ breakout performance came in the championship game of the 2006 RBC Royal Bank Cup, where he scored three times and added an assist – picking up game MVP honours – as Burnaby won the national championship with an 8-2 win over the Yorkton (SK) Terriers.

One of the highest-rated prospects for the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Turris also made a big splash on the international scene in 2006/07, including two stints with Canada’s National Under-18 Team – the 2006 Junior World Cup in the Czech Republic and the 2007 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Finland.

He played a major role in Canada West’s gold medal triumph at the 2007 World Junior A Challenge in Yorkton, SK, scoring his team’s first four goals in a tournament-opening win over Russia on his way to the tournament’s UnderArmour Undeniable MVP award.

In addition to his on-ice exploits, Turris has been very involved with the Burnaby community off the ice, working with a number of good causes.

He has served as a guest coach for various minor hockey teams within the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association, visited elementary schools to read to young children and talk about the importance of staying in school, and helps out a few times a year with the Salvation Army, serving meals to less-fortunate people.

Now that his Junior A career is complete, Turris will move on to the University of Wisconsin for the 2007/08 season, where he has chosen to major in Business.
