VICTORIA – Young hockey players from across British Columbia will be given the opportunity to participate
in the 2007 Tobacco Free Sports Provincial Hockey Showcase said Gordon Hogg, Minister of State for ActNow
BC.
The showcase event is part of the 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup National Junior A
Hockey Championship taking place in Prince George May 4 – 13th.
“The Tobacco Free Sports Provincial Hockey Showcase is a chance for some of our younger players to
experience and participate in a major national hockey event,” said Hogg. “ActNow BC and the health
authorities are proud to support this event, which works towards our ActNow BC goals of reducing tobacco use
and increasing physical activity levels among British Columbians.”
The Tobacco Free Sports Provincial Hockey Showcase will feature pee wee hockey players, age 11 and 12
years old, from across the province in skills competitions that begin this week until the end of March. The
hockey teams will conduct their skills testing during practices. Winning players will be selected through
Hockey Canada to compete in Prince George for the BC Hockey finals during the RBC Royal Bank Cup.
“This program is a great way to challenge and showcase the skills of our developing athletes alongside
those vying for the National Junior A Championship,” said BC Hockey president Al Berg. “We are thankful to
all for this opportunity.”
Tobacco Free Sports supports programs and initiatives to reduce tobacco use and exposure to second-hand
smoke across the province. It is part of an international initiative that aims to reduce the harm of tobacco
by addressing the relationship between tobacco use and sport. Tobacco Free Sports is endorsed by leading
health and sport organizations including the World Health Organization, International Olympic Committee, and
International Football Federation.
The RBC Royal Bank Cup and the Tobacco Free Sports Provincial Hockey Showcase will further support the
work of Tobacco Free Sports by ensuring that all venues are smoke-free and a minimum of 20 metres from
general public entrances.
The Province through ActNow BC and the health authorities are title sponsors of the 2007 Tobacco Free
Sports Provincial Hockey Showcase event.
Prince George is the host for the 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup, which draws five teams and coaches from across
the country with the final game telecasted by TSN Sports. The Tobacco Free Sports Provincial Hockey Showcase
will be one of the highlights during the week long event.
