PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS

The 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup hosts did not get off to as quick a start as they might have hoped in 2006/07, winning just three of their opening 10 games. The team struggled to find consistency in the season’s early going, following up a five-game winning streak with a four-game losing streak in October. Near the bottom of the Interior Conference as the calendar turned to 2007, head coach and general manager Ed Dempsey pulled the trigger on a number of deadline trades, picking up four new players while losing just one off of the active roster. The trades paid immediate dividends, as the Spruce Kings went on a six-game winning streak immediately following the deadline and won 15 of their final 22 games (15-5-1-1) to move into fifth in the Interior Conference. Nineteen-year-old Jesse Fratkin ran away with the team’s scoring lead, with 74 points (26 goals, 48 assists) in 60 games, 27 points more than second-place Jordan Inglis. Rookie goaltender Joe Rodwell finished second in the B.C. Hockey League with a 2.71 goals against average in 29 games, just 0.15 behind league leader Corey Milan of Penticton. The Spruce Kings’ fifth-place finish meant a first-round meeting with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. Leading 3-2, the Spruce Kings failed to capitalize on a chance to win the series on home ice, dropping a 4-3 overtime decision in Game 6, and saw their BCHL season come to and end with a 4-2 Game 7 loss in Salmon Arm two nights later, becoming the third consecutive RBC Royal Bank Cup host to lose in the opening round of the playoffs.
