HOCKEY CANADA ANNOUNES BID FINALISTS FOR THE
2009 IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

CALGARY, AB – Hockey Canada's announced on Monday that all five bid presentations for the 2009 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship have been short listed to make in-person presentations to the Site Selection Committee. The groups are (listed alphabetically):

Alberta (Calgary/Edmonton)
Montreal, QC
Ottawa, ON
Saskatchewan (Saskatoon/Regina)
Toronto, ON

Hockey Canada’s site selection process will continue with each of the finalists making a 1-hour in-person presentation (30 minute presentation followed by a 30 minute question and answer period) to the Site Selection Committee on April 18, 2006. The presentations will be held in Calgary, AB at the Calgary Round Up Centre.

Hockey Canada began the bid process for the hosting of the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship on October 13, 2005 by making the bid guidelines available. The 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship will take place in late December 2008 through early January 2009.

Hockey Canada’s Board of Directors recommends site for 2009 IIHF WJHC to the IIHF for approval

The 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship Site Selection Committee is comprised of Bob Nicholson (President, Hockey Canada), René Marcil (Chair of the Board, Hockey Canada), David Branch (President, Canadian Hockey League) and resource person Scott Smith (Hockey Canada’s Senior Vice-president, Business Operations). This committee will review all bids and recommend a site to Hockey Canada’s Board of Directors.

Canada has hosted the IIHF World Junior Championship a total of seven times. Past Canadian host cities were Vancouver/Kamloops/Kelowna, BC (2006),Halifax/Sydney, NS (2003), Winnipeg, MB (1999), Red Deer, AB (1995), Saskatoon, SK (1991), Hamilton, ON (1986) and Montreal, QC (1978).
