ONTARIO RED WINS GOLD MEDAL AT 2011 NATIONAL
WOMEN’S UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIP

SAGUENAY, Que. – Ontario Red has won the gold medal at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship for the seventh consecutive time, beating Quebec 3-0 in Sunday’s gold medal game in front of more than 2,000 fans at the Centre Georges-Vézina.

Sunday’s final marked the sixth time in seven tournaments Ontario Red and Quebec had met with the gold medal on the line, with Ontario Red winning all six games (2001, January 2005, November 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011).

It took just 63 seconds for Ontario Red to take the lead, as Jaimie McDonell (East York, Ont.) beat Quebec netminder Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Que.) for a 1-0 advantage. Victoria Pittens (Whitby, Ont.) made it 2-0 late in the second period and Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont.) rounded out the scoring into an empty net with just 24 seconds remaining as Ontario Red capped off an undefeated run through the tournament and improved its all-time record at the tournament to 35-1.

Pittens finished with a goal and an assist, while Nicole Brown (Oshawa, Ont.) added two assists. Ontario Red goaltender Amanda Leveille (Kingston, Ont.) made 22 saves for her second shutout of the tournament.

Earlier Sunday, Manitoba beat Team Atlantic 3-1 to win the bronze medal for the third time in four tournaments. Danielle Leslie (Winnipeg, Man.), Danielle Krzyszczyk (Winnipeg, Man.) and Ashleigh Brykaliuk (Brandon, Man.) scored the goals for Manitoba, which outshot Team Atlantic 38-11.

Following Sunday’s gold medal game, the tournament award winners were announced:

Most Valuable Player: Jaimie McDonell (East York, Ont.) – Ontario Red

Top Forward: Shannon MacAulay (Mount Herbert, P.E.I.) – Team Atlantic

Top Defenceman: Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ont.) – Ontario Red

Top Goaltender: Amanda Leveille (Kingston, Ont.) – Ontario Red

Most Sportsmanlike Player: Cayley Mercer (Exeter, Ont.) – Ontario Red
