TEAM CANADA WINS THE 2005 TORINO ICE TOURNAMENT

TORINO, ITALY – Team Canada played the USA for the second time in three days as the two national women’s hockey teams met in the final of the Torino Ice tournament in Turin, Italy on Saturday evening.

Canada scored early and often as they built a 5-0 lead after the first period.

Dana Antal opened the scoring with a shot from behind the net that caught USA goalie Shari Vogt on the shoulder and bounced in. Canada’s Hayley Wickenheiser scored her first of two on the period after Cherie Piper left a drop pass that Wickenheiser hammered home. Wickenheiser scored her second goal from the point on a 5-on-3 power play as she blasted a laser that found the top corner of the net, which prompted USA to replace Vogt with Pam Dreyer in goal. Canada continued to take advantage of its power play opportunities as Katie Weatherston scored a pair of goals, both from down low at the side of the net, each being a Canadian 5-on-3 advantage. Canada’s Kim St-Pierre was quiet at the other end of the ice facing 4 USA shots.

Canada continued to score as Jayna Hefford picked the top corner four minutes into the period to put Canada ahead 6-0. The two teams played fairly even after that, with Canada out shooting the USA 8-6.

Captain Cassie Campbell scored the seventh and final goal of the game in the third period giving Canada a 7-0 victory to win the 2005 Torino Ice Tournament. Kim St-Pierre had her second consecutive shut-out against USA and made 16 earning a win.

Canada now has a 6-0 record versus the USA so far this season, and will play each other four more times before the Olympics in February.

Team Canada will travel back to Calgary, AB on Sunday and assume training on Tuesday.
