VELDEN, Austria – Just because they didn’t qualify for the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship
doesn’t mean there wasn’t something to play for for the four nations who gathered for the 2007 Christmas
Cup.
Italy, the Netherlands and Slovakia joined the host Austrians for the three-day round-robin tournament
from December 28th to 30th in the small Austrian town of Velden am Worthersee, and it was the Slovakians who
came away with the tournament title, finishing with a perfect 3-0 record.
After opening the tournament with wins over the Italians (3-1) and Austrians (5-2), the undefeated Slovaks
met the Dutch with the 2007 Christmas Cup on the line.
After Nicol Cupkova game Slovakia the lead with a goal midway through the second period, Jessie Tegelaat
pulled the Netherlands even late in the middle frame, and a scoreless third period meant overtime would
decide the championship.
With just 20 seconds remaining in the extra period, Maria Herichova was the hero for Slovakia, scoring her
second goal of the tournament to give the Slovakians the championship. Herichova’s goal also gave her the
tournament scoring title, which she shared with teammate Lenka Srokova – both finished with two goals and two
assists.
