FAST START HELPS BLUE TO WIN, UNDEFEATED CAMP
TORONTO, Ont. – A four-goal first period was more than enough for Blue as it knocked off Yellow 5-2 on
Saturday at the MasterCard Centre to finish as the only undefeated team at the National Women’s Program
selection camps.
Blue earned a pair of wins over Yellow, its under-22 rivals, and beat both Red and White, the two under-18
teams in camp.
Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) got the offensive onslaught going just 4:10 in, snapping a shot from
the slot past Yellow netminder Geneviève Lacasse (Scarborough Ont.), and after Jessica Wong (Baddeck, N.S.)
momentarily pulled Yellow even, Hayleigh Cudmore (Oakville, Ont.) struck on a Blue power play after slick
passing from Vicki Bendus (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) and Jillian Saulnier (Halifax, N.S.) to restore the one-goal
lead.
Blue didn’t quit there, as Vanessa Emond (Lévis, Que.) made it 3-1 and Jessica Campbell (Melville, Sask.)
converted another man advantage, rifling a wrist shot past Lacasse for a 4-1 lead after 20 minutes. The goals
from Cudmore, Emond and Campbell came in a span of 4:43, and put Yellow in a hole it could not recover
from.
After a scoreless second period Yellow did eventually put another puck past Blue goaltender Roxanne
Douville (Beloeil, Que.) thanks to Brianne Jenner (St. Catharines, Ont.), but an empty net goal from Isabel
Menard (Ottawa, Ont.) with 40 seconds to go was the final nail in the Yellow coffin and the final exclamation
point on an undefeated camp for Blue.
With the intersquad games complete, Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team will be named on Sunday
morning and will face Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team on Monday before welcoming the United States to
the MasterCard Centre for a three-game series, August 18-21.
