CANADA’S NATIONAL MIDGET CHAMPIONSHIP
OFFICIALLY NAMED THE TELUS CUP

GATINEAU, QC – Hockey Canada announced on Friday that TELUS has signed on as a Premier Sponsor of Hockey Canada and that Canada’s National Midget Championship will be named the TELUS Cup.  The TELUS Cup, formerly known as the ‘Air Canada Cup’, has been a staple in Canada since 1974 and is the only recognized national championship for minor hockey in Canada.

"TELUS is delighted to put its support behind Hockey Canada and the TELUS Cup, Canada’s National Midget AAA Championship," said Michael Martin, TELUS Business Solutions Regional Vice President.  "As part of our commitment to becoming Canada's premier corporate citizen, this is another demonstration of TELUS' promise to support amateur sport from coast to coast, from Pee Wee to podium."

“Today is an important day for the host committee since it marks the official launch of the promotional campaign and the sale of passports for the 2005 TELUS Cup, the supremacy of Midget hockey in Canada that will be held in Gatineau, QC April 18-24, 2005,” said Alain Bastarache, Chairperson, Host Committee.  “We are all proud to be associated with TELUS and Hockey Canada for the hosting of this national event featuring the best Midget hockey teams and players in Canada.”

Having showcased their talents in the National Midget AAA competition, many former players go on to have outstanding careers in junior hockey and professional leagues. Team Canada’s World Cup of Hockey 2004 stars such as Simon Gagné and Joe Sakic both competed in this Championship as has current junior star and 2004 National Junior Team member Sidney Crosby.

“Hockey Quebec is proud of the work that the host committee has accomplished to date,” said Claude Allain, President of Hockey Quebec.   “Hockey Quebec encourages everyone to support the efforts of all those involved. The TELUS Cup is a showcase of our young players' talent and a demonstration that hockey is a sport accessible to all.”

A limited amount of TELUS CUP passes, which grants access to all games including the championship game, are now on sale for $40 (plus applicable taxes), a saving of 35% on daily passes.  For more detailed information on tickets please call 819-595-7700 or 819-773-7360.
